Voice Magazine

by Nici West

Project
Voice is a magazine and platform for young creatives covering arts, culture, politics and technology.

Brief
They wanted a series of articles aimed at young people looking to get into a career in the arts, and completing one of Trinity College London’s arts exams: Arts Award, Drama or Music. As there are various different ages and needs within their youth audience, I divided the series between those aimed at the younger group (13+ and those aimed at the older group (16+). The tone of voice is deliberately quite friendly, fun and concise, broken into easy-to-digest headings, with lots of accompanying images and graphics.

For a younger audience: What makes a good arts leader?

Meet Rainbow. Rainbow is a great arts leader. Awesome, in fact. They know when to help others when to demonstrate things and when to leave a conversation open. Their participants always feel welcome and accepted and able to experiment with learning new things. Rainbow has all the attributes of an awesome arts leader. What do you think they are? For an older youth audience: Tips for resolving conflict during a project

So, your project participants aren’t getting on that well? In the words of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, DON’T PANIC! Everyone disagrees about something at some point. Try to remember it’s not personal, and everyone experiences things in their own way. The key to resolving conflict is to take a step back, remain unbiased to people's observations of their experiences, and try to think outside the box for resolution.

Step one is to run a guided conversation. This is where you facilitate a conversation and invite everyone to respond to specific questions about the project and conflicts you’re experiencing. One approach might be to use a ‘talking stick’ (or your own version of this) and have the facilitator, or yourself, ask a question and give each person a turn to answer. Remind your participants to remain neutral and try not to point fingers at individuals. Focus on actions and the project aims instead. You’re all in this together…
